Don’t let a blood clot spoil your travel plans, from the March 2015 Harvard Women’s Health Watch

Boston, MA (PRWEB) March 20, 2015

Blood clots can develop in the legs during hours of sitting in a plane, train, or automobile, a condition called deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). These clots can be painful, and even deadly, reports the March 2015 Harvard Women’s Health Watch.

If a blood clot grows in a leg vein, it can interfere with circulation in the leg, causing pain and swelling. Sometimes a small piece of the clot breaks off and travels to another part of the body this tiny traveler is known as an embolus. A pulmonary embolus a clot that lodges in the lungs can block the flow of oxygen to the body, leading to fatigue, breathlessness, chest pain, and even death. Approximately 300,000 people die from pulmonary embolism in the United States every year.

“It usually takes more than a single factor for DVT to develop,” says Dr. Julianne Stoughton, a vascular surgeon at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Age is one factor; the chance of developing a blood clot begins to increase after age 40 and continues to rise throughout life. Inactivity imposed by travel is another. Taking a medication that promotes blood clotting, as well as conditions like factor V Leiden mutation, cancer, and heart disease, also increase the risk.

Several preventive measures can reduce the risk of developing a blood clot when you’re on the road or in the air:

Wear compression stockings. These aren’t the thick, rubbery, beige hose of yesteryear. Compression stockings are now virtually indistinguishable from opaque hose and come in a variety of colors. Made from an elastic material, they exert more pressure at the ankle than at the calf. This helps send blood back up through the veins to the heart.

Move around. Take a break every hour. When on a plane, bus, or train, walk the aisles; when driving, stop at a rest area. While seated, practice tracing the letters of the alphabet in the air with one foot, then the other, using the big toe as a “pen point.”

Stay awake. Don’t take a sleeping pill. A long nap in a seated position lets blood pool in the legs.

Keep hydrated. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol, which is dehydrating. Staying hydrated may mean more bathroom visits, but getting up and walking down the aisle keeps blood circulating.

Wear loose clothing. It’s less likely to restrict blood flow.

Ask a doctor about taking low-dose aspirin. There is some evidence that a taking a baby aspirin before a trip can prevent blood clots.

2015 Monster Army Recon Tour Dates and Partnerships Announced – Recon Tour Partners with Mongoose Bikes and Expands the PRO/AM Tour

(PRWEB) March 10, 2015

Hookit and Monster Energy are pleased to announce the 2015 Monster Army Recon Tour dates and venues as well as a new partnership with Mongoose Bikes.

Hookit and Monster Energy created the Recon Tour in 2012 as a regional BMX contest series in Southern California. The mission was simple: discover, support and progress the best up-and-coming athletes in their sport. The past two years the tour has grown into a nationwide event that added structure and a vision to progress and truly identify the next unknown talent, while also supporting the professional athletes.

We initially set out to fill a void and create a much needed amateur BMX contest series to encourage and support the up and coming riders and sport of BMX, said Scott Tilton, CEO of Hookit. The talent that has been discovered as a result of Recon Tour has been ridiculous and were honored to be a part of something that is contributing to and protecting the future of BMX.

For 2015, the BMX contest series has expanded once again into a nationwide effort to support both amateur and PRO athletes in a much bigger way. Monster Army has stepped up once again as the Title Sponsor. Monster has also increased the PRO purse while giving the amateurs a chance to also earn paid to podium.

Monster Army is always striving to push the progression of sports and help athletes get to the next level. With the decline of PRO BMX events over the last number of years and no opportunity for the amateurs to make it to the next level, Monster stepped up by offering both the professional and amateur athletes a chance to compete and progress in their sport while competing for a large Prize Purse. With all of the Monster PRO team on board we look forward to further develop the Recon Tour in 2015, Said Christopher Stumbles, Sports Marketing Manager at Monster Energy.

The Tour has expanded into 7 AM events and 4 PRO events with an overall PRO/AM final. Each amateur podium winner in Open class will be invited and travel paid to the Recon Tour PRO/AM finals, where they will compete against the best BMX athletes in the world. Each PRO event will be a series format with $ 15k on the line at each event and $ 20k at the finals. The overall PRO series winner will also take home a significant prize at the PRO/AM Final.

The Recon Tour is an excellent platform that provides young talent their first taste of competition and allows more experienced athletes exposure to top level riding, said Steve Wilcox, Sports Marketing Manager – Mongoose.

We believe in cultivating up-and-coming talent, and one way were able to do this is through offering a wide range of accessible bikes making it easy for both experienced riders and those who are new to BMX to find something that fits their riding style. When we found out there was an opportunity to get involved with the Recon Tour, we couldnt say no.

Tour Dates:

Dallas Chamber Symphony Announces Second Annual Sight of Sound Film Competition; Entry Deadline is March 1, 2015.

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) January 09, 2015

The Dallas Chamber Symphony invites filmmakers from around the world to participate in its Second Annual Sight of Sound Film Competition by creating new, short, silent films that are set to and inspired by a piece of classical music (much like Disneys Fantasia, yet inclusive of live-action films). The deadline for original entries is March 1, 2015 with the winners being announced at the Symphonys April 28, 2015 season finale. The competition and event are co-sponsored by the Video Association of Dallas.

It has been our goal from day one to provide North Texas with an alternative to typical symphonic performances, says Richard McKay, Artistic Director and Conductor of the Dallas Chamber Symphony. We have gained accolades and a significant fan base for our concerts which pair classic silent movies to newly commissioned musical scores. Sight of Sound is a logical, yet innovative extension as it explores the opposite of this creative cinematic process.

At the April 28th event, all finalists will receive a live concert screening of their films at Dallas City Performance Hall with the orchestra performing the soundtrack live-to-film on stage. Finalists are also eligible to receive a $ 500 Audience Favorite Award (selected by audience members via text), as well as a $ 500 Best Picture Award to be determined by the competitions jury of filmmakers.

Sight of Sound provides an amazing opportunity for artists to create new films for pairing with some of the greatest masterpieces in classical music, while extending professional recognition and exposure to filmmakers with local music and film critics who will attend the event, says McKay.

Filmmakers may either submit a film for accompaniment with one of the competitions nine 2015 music selections or enter a wild card submission that is set to a piece of their choosing. Films can be narrative, abstract, animation, live action, etc., as a diverse variety of formats and interpretations are welcome. The most successful entries tend to be those films that are three to ten minutes in duration and exhibit a strong interplay between sound and picture. Filmmakers should consult the competition guidelines found at SightOfSound.org prior to submitting a film. Sample films, including last years winning film, can also be found on the website.

After the debut concert, quarterfinalists and finalists are given complimentary license to use and distribute the orchestras professional musical recording, dubbed to their films, across all motion media, worldwide in perpetuity.

Named Best of Big D 2014 by D Magazine, and Best Classical Music Addition 2013 by the Dallas Observer, the Dallas Chamber Symphony is one of the most exciting and innovative professional performance ensembles in North Texas. Led by Artistic Director and Conductor Richard McKay, it is comprised of 40 musicians, all dedicated to performing a balance of programs that include underrepresented and standard chamber repertory, contemporary music, staged works, and pieces with extra-musical elements, such as film, actors and dancers.

The DCS performs at the gorgeous new City Performance Hall in the Dallas Arts District, and provides educational and community programming, including an annual International Piano Competition at SMU, field-trip concerts for area youth, and Sight of Sound, an annual International Film Competition. For more information, visit http://www.DallasChamberSymphony.org.

The mission of the Video Association is to promote an understanding of video as a creative medium and cultural force in our society, and to support and advance the work of Texas artists working in video and the electronic arts. The Video Association of Dallas (VAD) is a 501(c)(3) organization incorporated on April 25, 1989. It began in 1986 as a weekend event, Video As A Creative Medium, presented at the Dallas Museum of Art by independent curators Barton Weiss and John Held. That first event, which included two nights of video by selected local and national video artists, was a great popular success, which led to the founding of the Dallas VideoFest (DVF) in 1987. Video Association of Dallas also presents the 24-Hour Video Race, the Texas Show Tour, North Texas College Film Festival, Texas Fllmmakers Production Fund workshops, Three Star Cinema, and other programs throughout the year.
